DAVID I. MUIR

David I. Muir is a fine arts photographer living in South Florida. He has a special love for candid, cultural and lifestyle photography – signature components of his photo art exhibitions. He excels at capturing a whole story through his lens, which often emits strong emotion from viewers of his work. Muir’s work has qualified for juried art contests as well as group and solo fine arts exhibitions. In particular, his critically acclaimed photo collection, Pieces of Jamaica was celebrated and led to national and international tours of his photo art.

In 2012, the collection, "Pieces Of Jamaica™," which captures the candid beauty of the Jamaican people and its rich and diverse landscape, was published as "Pieces Of Jamaica™: The Real Rock Edition". The book features vivid photographs displaying Jamaica's rustic reality juxtaposed with spirited humanity and an intrinsic beauty found in its people.

Muir's love affair with photography began in the early 1980s when he would take his father's camera to school and capture images of campus life in Kingston, Jamaica. The transformation from hobby to profession propelled the growth of his portrait and event photography business, DAVIDiPhoto Inc. The commercial photography business is recognized as the premier event photography business of South Florida's Caribbean- and African-American communities.

Muir is a trained Clinical Social Worker. He has previously worked as a Family Counselor and Parent Educator as well as being a Counselor for teens at various social service organizations. He is also a Board Member, and Volunteer Photographer, for The Heart Gallery of Broward County.

Muir mentors younger photographers and teaches photography to those pursuing photography as a hobby and as a profession. He currently teaches Digital Photography at Broward College and has taught photography to middle and high school summer programs.  He strives to lay a foundation of understanding such that his students are free to create photo art.

Muir’s collection, “Portraitic Perspectives,” speaks to The Color of Beauty, a story not commonly told. He succeeds at displaying REAL as BEAUTIFUL, striking with his lens against pressures for retouched images that permeate magazines, billboards and social media. David is diligent in his efforts to capture his subjects’ true essence. He stands for real and natural, and delights in challenging, even redefining, preconceived notions of beauty.

Muir has been featured by numerous Jamaican and American media houses, including the Miami Herald, Sun-Sentinel, Hot105FM, NBC-6, ABC-10, FOX, CVM (Jamaican TV), TVJ (Jamaican TV), Jamaica Observer and the Jamaica Gleaner.
